After building 100+ websites for Australian businesses, here's what consistently moves conversion rates from 0.5% to 5%+ — and what's pure cargo cult.
Most small business websites in Australia convert at less than 1%. The good ones convert at 3–7%. The difference is rarely 'design' — it's a handful of structural decisions made early.
The 5 things that consistently move conversion
- A clear, specific value proposition above the fold (not 'we deliver excellence')
- Click-to-call and click-to-message on mobile, in the header and on every section
- Real photos of your team and work — not stock photography
- Service-area pages built around the suburbs and cities you actually serve
- Page speed under 2.5 seconds on mobile (most AU SMB sites are 5–8s)
What doesn't move the needle
Animated hero videos, parallax scrolling, fancy cursor effects and complex micro-interactions look cool in the portfolio but rarely change conversion rates. Sometimes they hurt them by slowing the page down.
Mobile is 68% of AU traffic
If your site looks great on desktop and clunky on mobile, you're losing two-thirds of your traffic. Build mobile-first, then scale up to desktop.
